On Saturday,May 19, our Pack will be going on a hike to Vetter Mountain Lookout. According to John Robinson's book Trails of the Angeles "Simply put, Vetter Mountain offers you maximum view for minimum effort. The fire lookout, perched on this prominent high point above Charlton Flat, affords a rewarding 360 degree panorama of the heartland of the San Gabriels."

DIRECTIONS: Take 210 West to Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2). Travel north (a right turn at the top of the freeway exit) and continue on Angeles Crest Highway for 24 miles to the Charlton Flats Picnic Grounds. This will take about an hour. We will meet at 10 am. at the pay phone.

To park  (without getting a ticket) in the National Forest you will need an Adventure Pass.
Sold by the U.S. Forest Service the Adventure Pass program as both one day passes for $5.00 and 12 month passes for $30.00.  The passes are sold at U.S. Forest stations, at the Forest entry roads on most weekends,  Big 5 and other sports shops. (Group passes are available, I will look into them and email you if obtain some)  A National Forest Adventure Pass is required to be displayed on your vehicle while it is parked.
The Pack is not providing carpooling, but contacting a friend and carpooling is permitted.

The hike is about 3 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 500 feet. We will eat lunch at the top and plan to be back at the parking lot by about 3 p.m.

BRING: Sack lunch and water, light jacket or sweatshirt (or both), and a day pack to carry these items in. We will be outside for 4 hours so if you need sunscreen, wear it.
Wear your uniform shirt and hat.

WEAR: Sturdy walking shoes (no sandals).
